Barbara Stanwyck was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1907. Her first job was at the local phone company for $14 a week, but soon began to follow her dreams of entering show business. Well, Ms. Stanwyck certainly did more than "enter" show business. In 1944 the government listed her as the nation's highest paying woman, earning $400,000. She did it by becoming one of the best actresses in Hollywood. Her wonderful performances in films like DOUBLE INDEMNITY, STELLA DALLAS, BALL OF FIRE and SORRY, WRONG NUMBER all earned her Best Actress nominations. Barbara Stanwyck's career lasted an amazing 59 years and included both television and feature films. Although probably best remembered for her dominating role in the TV series THE BIG VALLEY, she also received four nominations for the Best Actress Academy Award. She received her first nomination for STELLA DALLAS and received another for her portrayal of a treacherous temptress in DOUBLE INDEMNITY, the Billy Wilder classic. Perhaps her last great performance was in SORRY, WRONG NUMBER in which she plays the intended victim of a murder plot.
